Description
1981 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser β Modified Trail Rig Heavily modified 1981 FJ40 Land Cruiser built as a dedicated wheeling rig. This vehicle carries a salvage title due to a low-speed rollover in the 1990s (per previous owner). It is not a restored cruiser, but a capable and proven off-road build.
The truck features a spring-over lift, lockers, and a 4-speed transmission sourced from a Chevy delivery truck. Suspension has been modified with FJ60 front springs, pushing the front axle forward approximately 2 inches for an altered wheelbase and improved approach. A custom-built full roll cage and custom rock sliders add protection on the trail.
Power comes from the original 2F engine. The factory carburetor was replaced with a Holley 2-barrel using a custom-fabricated adapter plate and linkage. The engine runs well and performs reliably off-road.
The body has visible rust, and the hard top is tweaked from the earlier rollover. The frame is solid with only surface rust and no structural rot. The vehicle is currently on roller tires and will need tires to be trail-ready.
Includes the original transmission and various spare parts. This FJ40 was used on a 3-day wheeling trip last fall and performed flawlessly. Best suited for someone looking for a ready-made trail rig rather than a restoration project.

Classic Toyota Land Cruiser Buyer's Guide (FJ40 / FJ55 / FJ60 / FJ62)
I approached my first Toyota Land Cruiser the way I approach every potential project: with a flashlight, a screwdriver, and a healthy skepticism about anything the seller told me. What I found was a vehicle engineered to a standard of mechanical integrity I hadn't encountered before β overbuilt axles, a bulletproof inline-six, and a simplicity of design that made every system accessible and rebuildable. That first FJ40 taught me why United Nations field teams, Australian outback farmers, and California trail enthusiasts all converged on the same truck. The challenge isn't whether to buy one β it's buying the right one, at the right price, in a market that has moved sharply upward.
