Description
This is the Syncro purist's holy grail: a 1987 Vanagon GL with the legendary all-wheel-drive system that defines these classics. Second owner, maintained by a mechanic, and comprehensively rebuilt. The waterboxed 2.2L engine has just 13k miles on the rebuild with all cylinders hitting 150+ psi, and the Syncro transmission was professionally rebuilt by Mr Gas with 1200 miles on it.
Recent work includes new clutch, water pump, radiator, fuel system, exhaust with stainless muffler, wiring harness, power steering rack, and rear CVs. All cylinders sealed tight—no leaks, no oil burn. Achieves 250-275 miles per tank and drives confidently from Santa Fe to the Front Range.
The interior remains in stock condition. Includes two extra seats for seven-passenger capability and newer 14-inch wheels. The honest side: needs a paint job and body work typical for a Colorado-stored vehicle, rust present.
AC unplugged due to a leak; heater blower needs replacement. Road-ready and awaiting its next adventure with an owner who understands what makes a Syncro special.

Classic Volkswagen Vanagon Buyer's Guide (T3, 1980–1991)
People who haven't driven a Vanagon often assume it's just a newer Bus. It isn't. The T3 Vanagon is a fundamentally different vehicle — water-cooled from 1983 onward, wider track, more rigid body, dramatically better handling, and genuinely livable as a daily driver. The Westfalia camper conversion and the Syncro 4WD variant have built dedicated followings that have pushed prices to levels that would have seemed absurd a decade ago. The buying challenges are real — the early water-cooled engines have specific failure modes, and rust is still present — but a properly sorted Vanagon is one of the most genuinely useful and characterful vehicles in the classic segment.
