Description

‘27 T-bucket hot rod roadster. The body is a fiberglass 1927 Model T Roadster. The body was prepped and painted by a body shop. The frame and most of the suspension parts were powder coated by Monroe Truck in Monroe, Wisconsin.

This car has an Oldsmobile 330 engine from a 1965 Vista Cruiser. Originally a two barrel engine, it now sports the aluminum intake from a late 70’s Olds and an Edelbrock 1406, 600 cfm carburetor with an electric choke. It has a Pertronix coil in cap GM type ignition and a one wire alternator made by Powermaster.

I have replaced, the fuel pump, oil pump, water pump, timing gears, timing chain, valve springs, and valve seals. The electric cooling fan is in front of the radiator, behind the grill, and is controlled by a thermostatic switch. The compression ratio is 9:1 and it runs on regular gas.

This car starts easily and starts every time. I drive it whenever the weather is clear. The lakes style headers were custom, and have internal baffles, and re-positionable turn outs. The transmission is a GM THM200-4R built by Gearstar to their level 2 spec.

The driveshaft is a custom. The rear end is a Ford 8.8 from an Explorer and has a 3.73 gear set, limited slip, and QA1 coil-overs. It has disc brakes all around. The steering column is a Flaming River tilt column with a Grant steering wheel with GM harness.

It has an E-Z Wiring kit, and the wiring is hidden and run, as much as possible, within the frame. The shifter is by Lokar. Gauges are by Dolphin and the speedometer runs on a GPS sender. Taillights are 48 Chevy and the headlights reproduction Guide 682-C by OTB.

The grill shell is a shortened, fiberglass ‘32 Ford. The air cleaner is a modern version of a late 50’s Cadillac/Oldsmobile unit. It is roadworthy, has a clean, clear title, is registered

I grew up around T-Buckets. My uncle had one in his garage in Torrance when I was twelve — flathead V8 with three carbs, no windshield, nothing between you and the road except a set of vintage Halibrand knockoffs. That car taught me more about what a hot rod actually is than any book ever could. The T-Bucket is the purest expression of the form: take a Ford Model T roadster body, strip everything non-essential, add power, drop it on a custom frame, and drive it. Simple in concept. Wildly variable in execution. Buying one smart means understanding the execution before you fall in love with the stance.

What to Check Before Buying

Poor-quality welds on structural members are a safety issue unique to hand-built vehicles; cold-lap or incomplete fusion on motor mounts or suspension pickups is a failure waiting to happen. Undersized or inadequate braking systems on powerful builds — a small-block in a 1,800-pound car needs properly engineered brakes. Electrical issues are universal on custom builds — non-standard wiring from multiple builders over the car's life can create reliability and fire hazards. On flathead V8 builds: head gasket failure between cylinders is the classic flathead failure mode; overheating accelerates it. Fiberglass bodies can crack at mounting points if the underlying frame flexes — look for cracks around body mount locations.

What to Look For

This is a build quality inspection, not a rust inspection. Examine all welds: frame rails, crossmembers, motor mounts, suspension pickup points, steering rack/box mounts. Look for consistent penetration, no cold-lap, no porosity. Check steering geometry and test for wobble — incorrect caster and kingpin geometry causes dangerous front-end shake at speed. Inspect brake system completeness and condition — verify it matches the power level of the engine. Check all suspension components for wear: king pins, tie rod ends, ball joints (if applicable). Verify the engine and drivetrain are properly secured and all safety-critical fasteners are present. On flathead builds: check for oil leaks at head gaskets, timing cover, and rear main. Ask for any build documentation — photos, receipts, notes. Verify the frame has not been repaired or cracked — look for evidence of re-welding on frame rails.

Pricing is entirely build-quality dependent — no other classic car has this wide a range. Basic fiberglass/SBC driver builds: $8,000–$15,000. Mid-tier with quality chassis work: $18,000–$35,000. Did You Know?

The T-Bucket style takes its name from the T-shaped appearance of the shortened Model T roadster body mated to a long hood. Norm Grabowski's 1952 "Kookie Car" — TV-famous on 77 Sunset Strip — is credited with triggering the nationwide T-Bucket craze.
