Description
1949 Oldsmobile 88 Original car. Oldsmobile introduced the 88 badge in 1949. It was named to complement the already-existing 76 and 98, and took the place of the straight-8 engined 78 in the model lineup.
The new car used the same new A-body platform as the straight-6 engined 76 but paired it with the new 303 cu in (5.0 L) Rocket V8 engine producing 135 horsepower (101 kW).[3] This combination of a relatively small light body and large, powerful engine made it widely considered to be the first muscle car. The Rocket 88 vaulted Oldsmobile from a somewhat staid, conservative car to a performer that became the one to beat on the NASCAR Please Note The Following **Vehicle Location is at our clients home and Not In Cadillac, Michigan. **We do have a showroom with about 25 cars that is by appointment only **Please Call First and talk to one of our reps at 231-468-2809 EXT 1 **

Oldsmobile 88 Buyer's Guide
Mike Sullivan here. Before the GTO, before the 409, before any car we typically call a "muscle car," there was the 1949 Oldsmobile 88. Take a look at what it was: the company put their new high-compression overhead-valve 303ci "Rocket" V8 β their big engine β into the lighter Futuramic 76 body instead of the heavier 98. Lighter car, bigger engine. That's the muscle car formula, and Oldsmobile invented it in 1949.
The Rocket 88 dominated NASCAR in 1950 and 1951, won its class at Daytona, and proved the performance credentials beyond any marketing claim. Jackie Brenston's "Rocket 88" β often called the first rock and roll song β was a tribute to this car in 1951. When you buy an early Olds 88, you're buying the origin story of American performance.
