Classic Chevy muscle-car fans. We know you've heard of the fire-breathing LS6 big-block in the 1970 Chevelle SS454, but did you know that there is a direct lineage between that legendary "454" and the 427ci big-block V-8, which Chevrolet introduced in 1966 and called the L72?
Yes, before the holy-grail LS6 Chevelle SS454, there was the stump-pulling L72 "427" and, just like the LS6, it was a solid-lifter, big-block Chevy that owned the street, the strip and our hearts back in the glory days.
So, when our friends at Dream Giveaway told us they were giving away a 425hp, 427ci L72 big-block '66 Chevy, we were keeping our fingers crossed that it was an Impala two-door sport coupe and we were right! (The L72 engine in a four-door or a wagon would be really cool, too!)

Here's what we know about this super-rare Impala. It is a special-ordered factory drag racer built at Chevrolet's Atlanta assembly plant as verified by its original window sticker. It was sold new at Batey Chevrolet in Carnegie, Pennsylvania. Factory options focused on maximum performance - the L72 427ci big-block, a Muncie four-speed and Positration.
This '66 Impala is an old-school muscle machine from when the 427ci big-block wasn't available in mid-size cars like the Chevelle SS.
The L72 427ci big-block engine was so legendary that it started the entire COPO program for Chevy and powered the Yenko, Baldwin-Motion and Dana Chevrolet Camaros, Novas and Chevelles.
