TJ is an in-house engineering code rather than an abbreviation. Jeep used it for the second-generation Wrangler, sold for the 1997 through 2006 model years, just as YJ and JK identify the generations before and after it. The older CJ code did stand for Civilian Jeep. The TJ brought back round headlights and replaced the earlier leaf springs with a coil-spring suspension.

The Jeep Wrangler had square headlights from the 1987 through 1995 model years, the full run of the first-generation Wrangler, code YJ. Introduced in 1986 to replace the CJ-7, the YJ kept leaf springs but switched to rectangular lamps. Jeep skipped the 1996 model year, and the 1997 Wrangler TJ returned to round headlights.

Jeep started making four-door Wranglers for the 2007 model year, when the JK generation added the four-door Wrangler Unlimited alongside the two-door model. The Unlimited name had first appeared in 2004 on a longer-wheelbase version of the TJ, but that model still had two doors. The four-door body carried over to the JL generation introduced for 2018.

The origin of the Jeep name is not settled. One explanation is that soldiers slurred the letters GP, taken from Ford's model code and often read as General Purpose, into one word. Another credits Eugene the Jeep, a character in the Popeye comic strip. The word was also Army slang as early as World War I. Willys-Overland was granted the Jeep trademark in June 1950.

American Bantam of Butler, Pennsylvania, built the first Jeep prototype in 1940, after the U.S. Army sent its specification for a light four-wheel-drive vehicle to 135 manufacturers. Willys-Overland of Toledo, Ohio, and Ford then developed their own versions. In July 1941 Willys won the contract for 16,000 of the standardized MB model, and Ford built the same Willys design as the GPW.

Jeep has passed through Willys-Overland, Kaiser, American Motors, Chrysler and, today, Stellantis. Kaiser bought Willys-Overland in 1953, American Motors bought Kaiser Jeep in 1970, and Chrysler acquired American Motors in 1987. Chrysler merged with Daimler-Benz in 1998, was sold to Cerberus Capital Management in 2007 and allied with Fiat in 2009. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles merged with PSA in January 2021 to form Stellantis.

Jeep stopped making the CJ in 1986, and the Wrangler took its place for the 1987 model year. The civilian line had started with the CJ-2A, which entered production on July 17, 1945. The CJ-5 was sold for the 1955 through 1983 model years, and the CJ-7, with a wheelbase 10 inches longer, ran from 1976 through 1986. More than 1.5 million CJs were built in all.

Classic Jeeps were built mainly in Toledo, Ohio, where Willys-Overland began military Jeep production in 1941 and built the first civilian CJ-2A in 1945. Toledo went on building the CJ line under Kaiser and American Motors, through 1986. The first Wrangler, the YJ, was instead assembled in Brampton, Ontario, from 1986 until 1992, when Wrangler production moved to Toledo, where it remains.
