Gassers for Sale

The gasser is one of the most distinctive shapes in American car culture — nose pitched skyward on a straight front axle, skinny front tires, fat rear slicks, and a stripped, no-nonsense attitude carried straight from the early NHRA Gas classes. From Willys coupes to tri-five Chevys and Anglias, the look is unmistakable. Browse current gasser listings below.

What is a gasser?

Gassers come from the Gas classes of 1950s and 60s drag racing, which required pump-gas engines and street-based bodies. To get weight forward and improve traction, racers fitted a solid straight front axle and jacked the nose up. The aesthetic — high stance, exposed chassis, big-and-little tires — became a style of its own that is still built today.

Buying a gasser

The most coveted base cars are 1933 to 1941 Willys coupes, followed by 1955 to 1957 Chevrolets and Austin/Anglia coupes. Because gassers are builds, judge the fabrication, the straight-axle conversion, and the engine. Period-correct details and a known build history add value; verify the body is solid under the paint, as many start life as rough project cars.

Frequently asked questions

The raised front, created by a straight front axle, shifts weight rearward for traction and was thought to help weight transfer on launch. It started as a racing necessity in the Gas classes and became the defining visual signature of the style.
Willys coupes (1933 to 1941) are the icons and command the highest prices. 1955 to 1957 Chevrolets are the most popular and accessible, and small British coupes like the Austin and Anglia make classic short-wheelbase gassers.
Many are titled and street-driven, but they are purpose-built and can be raw to drive. Check lights, brakes, and tires for road use, and confirm the title and VIN. As with any heavy build, prioritize fabrication quality over cosmetics.
