Description
1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Super Sport 396 4-Speed, Correct Code 78 Black Cherry, Period-Correct 396 Big Block, Classic Muscle Presence If you are looking for a true American muscle car that checks the right boxes for performance, presentation, and unmistakable muscle car presence, this 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle deserves a serious look. Finished in its correct and highly desirable Code 78 Black Cherry exterior with no vinyl top, this Chevelle carries the aggressive styling and commanding road presence that made the 1970 model year one of the most iconic muscle car years ever produced. Under the hood sits a suffix code IV period-correct 396 cubic inch Big Block V8 engine with a 440 Casting Number rated at 325 horsepower, upgraded with headers and aluminum intake which increased the horsepower higher than the 325 horsepower which is why previous owner had installed a 375 Horsepower sticker on the air cleaner.
The car is equipped with a Auto Gear high-performance Muncie replacement 4-speed manual transmission. Power is transferred through a CCF 12-bolt Posi-Traction rear end, giving this car the performance pedigree enthusiasts look for in a true classic muscle machine. Inside, the car offers the quintessential muscle car interior with black bucket seats, center console, factory tach and gauge package, and a tilt steering column.
A non-original AM/FM cassette radio has been installed for added cruising enjoyment while maintaining the vintage character of the cabin. This Chevelle is an older restoration that has clearly been well cared for and continues to present exceptionally well today. The correct Black Cherry paint has an excellent shine, the body presents nicely, and the overall fit and finish make this a standout example that shows extremely well.
The car has the right stance, the right attitude, and the kind of curb appeal that instantly draws attention. Rolling on proper 14-inch SS wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires, this Chevelle captures the classic muscle car look exactly as it should. All signs point to this car being a real Super Sport Chevelle.
However, without a build sheet or the original born-with engine, we cannot guarantee it as an original factory Super Sport. We believe in full transparency and want prospective buyers to have accurate information when considering this exceptional muscle car. Chevrolet Chevelle SS Buyer's Guide
Mike Sullivan here. The Chevelle SS needs no introduction, but it does need honest context: this is one of the most desirable muscle cars in the market, which means it's also one of the most heavily cloned. Understanding what you're buying β and paying for β requires more homework on a Chevelle SS than on almost any other classic. Get it right, and you've got one of the great American performance machines. Get it wrong, and you've paid a premium for a base Malibu with SS emblems bolted on.
The SS package ran from 1964 through 1972 on the A-body Chevelle platform. Each year produced something meaningful, but the 1969β1972 era is where the market concentrates. The LS6 454 of 1970 is widely considered the most powerful muscle car engine ever offered in a factory car, and a correct, documented LS6 Chevelle is the holy grail for serious collectors.
