The 1963-½ Ford Galaxie 500-the automotive industry's first official half-year model-was a midyear attempt to improve looks and make the full-sized car more competitive in NASCAR competition. Ford lowered the roofline and stretched the rear rake to make a fastback sports hardtop, which reduced drag and aero lift at speed. As denoted on the exterior badging, this restored, rust-free, Z-code 1963-½ Galaxie 500 Fastback has a highly optioned XL trim package with a few custom touches thrown in. The XL package consists of many luxury upgrades inside and out. The Rangoon Red exterior sports Galaxie 500XL badging along with distinctive Galaxie 500 body trim with double side molding, rear body trim panel and back-up lights centered in the tail lights. The paint shows very well with the chrome and stainless in terrific condition. Brand new Wheel Vintiques Wheels (15x7 front and 15x8 rear) with poverty hubcaps and BF Goodrich tires complete the classic look. The engine is a 390 CI mill dressed with gold valve covers and air cleaner, as worn from the factory. Power steering, power brakes (disc front, drum rear) and air conditioning are added creature comforts. The engine is mated to a console-shifted Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission to propel it down the road smoothly. The interior is where the XL package really comes to light, with the seats, doors and side panels receiving chrome and chrome-like Mylar accents. A chrome-trimmed console splits the pleated vinyl bucket seats with bright metal side shields, while the red carpet is protected with Galaxie-embroidered floor mats. An underdash air-conditioning unit sits just below the heater control, clock and AM/FM radio (with power antenna). The instrument panel houses all the vital information with a unique center-mounted, custom-made Holman Moody replica gauge cluster with H-M tachometer, oil and water gauges. Overall, this Galaxie 500XL is in terrific shape, showing only light signs of use with 79,000 miles on the odometer.
