1965 Studebaker Commander Wagonaire, Sliding roof, Station Wagon. The Studebaker Wagonaire was a station wagon produced by the Studebaker Corporation of South Bend, Indiana, from 1963 to 1966. It featured a retractable sliding rear roof section that allowed the vehicle to carry items that would otherwise be too tall for a conventional station wagon of the era. Studebaker Wagonaire's roof design was the invention of industrial designer Brooks Stevens, who was charged by the automaker's president, Sherwood Egbert, to expand the company's limited model range without spending vast amounts of capital on retooling. There was only 2695 of these V8 Wagonaires built in 65. This is a Beautiful wagon with the optional 283 Thunderbolt engine producing 195hp, automatic transmission....and of course the rear sliding roof! These were designed so you could haul something tall in the rear of the wagon the same as you would be able to do in a pickup truck. This beauty is Midnight Black outside with red highlights with black interior. This 283 engine option is the same as the Chevrolet 283 that was built in Canada and cost an additional $38.74 over the 259 V8 engine. The automatic trans, the factory air conditioning, the power drum brakes and the power steering are all options on this Wagonaire. This very rare wagon is in super nice condition! A show car from one end to the other.
