The fourth generation Chevrolet Monte Carlo was introduced for the 1981 model year. The fourth generation saw more angular styling, and was only offered as a two-door coupe. Whereas previous Monte Carlos had featured a range of V8 engines, the new generation saw more emphasis placed on V6 units, although a few V8s were still offered. In 1983, alongside new, sleeker styling, Chevrolet reintroduced the 'SS' performance version after a twelve-year hiatus. Production of the fourth generation Monte Carlo ended in 1988, and the model was discontinued temporarily. In 1995, the model was reintroduced for the Fifth Generation Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
