Description
1986 Land Rover 110 (DEFENDER). Desirable Left Hand Drive. This vehicle has been my weekly driver for 6 years, well maintained, structurally solid and cosmetically good example of the long wheelbase Defender and is relatively stock.
It has the original 3.5 liter, carbureted V8 mated to the stock LT85 5-speed manual transmission. 85,000 miles. (This motor will never die.) The vehicle was repainted Poppy Red over the factory brown when put into service in a small village in Austria as the community fire truck. (FEUERWEHR = Fire Vehicle. Petina shows the name of the village on the doors.) I have the original owner's manual, decommissioning documents, and service logs from early in its life. WORK PERFORMED SINCE 2016 Removed majority of Waxoyl from the frame for inspection and repair.
Replaced the rear crossmember with a galvanized replacement, patched any problem areas. The frame has been repaired over the life of the vehicle but is solid. Repaired with POR 90. Replaced the rear tub aluminum floor and top hats with double thickness custom laser cut panels as well as a new galvanized tube support crossmember from YRM Footwells and front door posts replaced with YRM parts.
C column on RH was replaced. New galvanized front shock towers. New OEM seat belt mounts in the rear tub, ner retracting shoulder seat belts and lap belt for reat. Removed a good deal of old service wiring that was cluttering up things.
Left a spare circuit to the roof and into the engine bay for future upgrades as the wiring was professional and heavy duty. Replaced the entire front end with OEM axle and assembly 2021 Overland Engineering has done the following work in the past 20k miles: New starter, leads and grounds, steering bushings, clutch, flywheel and rear main seal and general tune up. Receipts for all.
UPGRADES SINCE 2016: New heavy duty Wolf wheels. Old Man Emu shocks NEW upgraded alternator 2020 so all lights/fog lights/heater could run simultaneously)

Land Rover Defender Buyer's Guide
Emily Chen here. The Defender rewards the kind of analytical ownership that I find most satisfying: understanding why the engineering decisions were made, what their implications are in use, and how to maintain a 30-year-old vehicle to modern reliability standards. The Defender is not a comfortable car in the conventional sense. It vibrates, it's loud at highway speed, the steering is heavy, and the seating position looks like something from a 1953 farm tractor β because it essentially is. None of that matters when you engage low-range and point it down a slope that no other production vehicle would survive.
The "Defender" name was applied retroactively in 1990 to distinguish the original Land Rover from the new Discovery. But the car being called a Defender β the 90/110/130 designation referring to wheelbase in inches β dates from 1983 when Land Rover moved from leaf springs to coil springs. This guide covers the 1983β2016 coil-spring era.
