The Toyota MR2 Turbo SW20 arrived with 200 horsepower and snap oversteer reputation intact, the 964 Carrera 2 brought Porsche's first new 911 body in 23 years, and the Acura NSX settled into its role as the benchmark.

1991 is the year the SW20 MR2 Turbo entered the US market and immediately began collecting cautionary tales. Toyota's turbocharged 2.2-liter 3S-GTE produced 200 horsepower pushing 2,900 pounds through the rear wheels with mid-engine geometry and relatively short wheelbase. The car rewarded commitment and punished lift-off throttle in corners with a consistency that became its defining characteristic. It was not a forgiving car.

The Porsche 964 Carrera 2 was in full stride by 1991, offering coil-spring suspension replacing the torsion bars that had been in 911s since 1963. It also brought ABS and a more modern interior. Traditionalists complained about the softening. The lap times at Weissach did not support their concern. Power steering and a 3.6-liter flat-six producing 247 horsepower made it the most capable base 911 to date.

On the domestic side, the Ford Mustang GT was still running the 5.0 HO V8 with 225 horsepower and the SVT division would not exist for another two years. GM was deep in restructuring. The performance narrative in 1991 belonged almost entirely to Japan and Germany, and the prices today reflect who was doing the interesting engineering.

1991 in automotive history
  • Toyota MR2 Turbo SW20 launched in the US with a 3S-GTE producing 200 horsepower and a base price of $24,878, replacing the supercharged AW11 and representing a significant jump in performance ambition from the first-generation car.
  • Porsche introduced the 911 Turbo 964 version at $95,000 US MSRP, the first new Turbo body style since the 930, producing 320 horsepower from a 3.3-liter flat-six with a new intercooler layout.
  • General Motors announced the closure of its Flint assembly plant producing the Buick Reatta, ending production after roughly 21,850 units across four model years, acknowledging that the two-seat specialty market had moved beyond what the Reatta offered.

Market: SW20 MR2 Turbos trade between $18,000 and $40,000 with the gap driven almost entirely by modification history and whether the suspension geometry has been addressed. Documented stock examples with service history approach the top of that range. The 964 Carrera 2 has settled between $55,000 and $90,000 for unmodified cars.

Buyer's note: On a 1991 SW20 MR2 Turbo, inspect the coolant bypass hoses behind the engine and the turbo oil return line for softening or weeping before evaluating anything else on the car.
