Detroit Autorama
Home of the Ridler Award β custom car building's highest honor
Detroit Autorama is one of America's great indoor custom car shows β held every March in the Motor City, just miles from where many of the cars on display were originally built. The crown jewel is the Don Ridler Memorial Award, given annually to the most outstanding custom car making its world debut at the show. The Ridler is custom car building's equivalent of an Oscar: the highest honor in the craft, and the subject of intense competition among the country's top builders.
Beyond the Ridler contenders, Autorama spans three floors of Huntington Place with hundreds of custom builds, resto-mods, hot rods, and lowriders. The show draws over 30,000 attendees over three days and is a pilgrimage for anyone serious about American custom car culture.
π‘ Did You Know?
To be eligible for the Ridler Award, a car must be making its absolute world debut at Detroit Autorama β it cannot have been shown anywhere else, not even in a magazine. Builders sometimes keep their cars secret for years to preserve eligibility.
Detroit Autorama is held in the Motor City β the birthplace of mass-market American automobiles. Many cars on the show floor were originally assembled within miles of where they're now being displayed as customs.
The "Great 8" β eight Ridler finalists β are announced during the show, creating intense suspense before the winner is revealed. Being named a Great 8 finalist is itself a major career honor for a builder.
Ridler-contending builds typically represent $300,000β$1,000,000+ in labor and materials. The cars are often built by two or three craftsmen working for years, funded by passionate collectors.
The Ridler Award has never been given to the same builder twice β the committee actively seeks to recognize new talent. This makes each year's winner a discovery, not just a repeat champion.
History
Detroit Autorama has been running since 1953, making it one of the oldest continuously operating custom car shows in the country. The Ridler Award was established in 1964 in honor of Don Ridler, an early show promoter. The award carries a strict requirement that has never been bent: the winning car must be making its public debut at the show, and it cannot have been shown anywhere else first. This rule creates genuine drama β builders hide their cars for years before the reveal.
