Head-to-Head

Ford F-250 vs Chevrolet C20 — Three-Quarter-Ton Classic Trucks

The Ford F-250 and Chevrolet C20 are the heavy-duty three-quarter-ton pickups of their eras, the trucks you buy to actually tow and haul. Both share looks and parts with their lighter half-ton siblings, so the choice comes down to brand, engine family, and which body you prefer.

The case for Chevrolet C20

Pick the C20 for the smoother-riding GM chassis, the coveted 1967-1972 styling, and the enormous square-body aftermarket. The 350 and 454 V8s and the optional 6.2 diesel cover light-to-heavy duty, and parts are the easiest to find in the classic truck world.

The case for Ford F-250

Pick the F-250 for the bulletproof 300 inline six, the bumpside and dentside styling that has a devoted following, and Ford's Twin I-Beam front end. The 360, 390, and big 460 V8s handle serious work. Ford truck parts support is excellent.

Verdict

Both are honest, capable haulers. The C20 tends to ride better and has the deeper aftermarket, especially in square-body years; the F-250 counters with the legendary 300 six and a strong vintage following. Buy on body condition and the drivetrain you want, since a three-quarter-ton truck usually lived a working life.

C20 vs F-250 — Common Questions

Both are three-quarter-ton trucks built to tow. The F-250 460 and the C20 454 are the heavy-haul engines; the GM 6.2 diesel is durable but slow. Either is capable when the drivetrain is healthy.
The square-body Chevrolet C20 has the deepest aftermarket of the two, though classic Ford truck parts are also widely available.
