1966 Alfa Spider For Sale ONE of ONE Hand Built with an Aluminum Body 1966 Alfa Motor and 5 Speed Manual Gearbox Fantastic Re-Creation That took 2 Years to Build The story really started when a friend of mine was strolling thru a foreign car salvage yard and came across a 1966 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spyder. The car was smashed flat from a roll over, all but one wheel bent and had bondo popping off from previous rust repairs. He pries the hood open and see this wonderful straight six. Dual overhead cams, three two barrel carbs, etc. Now this friend is the sort of guy who loves to collect mechanical master pieces with no real purpose in mind. So he buys the car for $600 and brings it home to the feed store his family owns. He goes to the auto parts store and finds that the distributor is the same one Massey Ferguson uses on some off their tractors! He get the car running and it sounds great. Parks it in the turkey shed. End of story. A few years later he says to me, you should buy that Alfa and build a car around it. So I I did. It took about 25 years for me to get started! I decided that I wanted a car with that late 50s early 60s Italian sports car styling. I built a steel tube frame for the engine and transmission. I also used the rear axle and steering column. I wanted to used the front suspension, but found that it was bent beyond repair. When I finished the frame I basically just built an aluminum body to cover the mechanical bits. I did not copy any particular car, just used styling elements that I liked. When I finished the car I took it to the Concours Italiano show in Monterey, Ca. I entered it as a Alfa Romeo and the crowd loved it. The purist Alfa collectors maybe not so much. I did meet an enthusiast from Lawndale, Ca. who had dream of building a replica of a 3000 CM Alfa Romeo. I later built him the car. The Meguires auto wax company took a picture of the car and used it for their ad in the next couple of years programs for the show. After the show I drove the car home from California to Missouri. Great fun. My brother was with me and we went by Lake Tahoe to see some wooden boats, then took hi way 50 across Nevada. Two years later the guy who sold me the engine went with me to California again. We drove to Grand Junction, Co. the first day(1100 mi.). Bonneville salt flats the next day, on to Monterey, attended some shows, then down the coast for the trip home via Hoover dam and the wolf creek pass. Great car, never missed a beat or failed make a stranger smile.
