Alfa Romeo was founded in Milan, Italy, on June 24, 1910, under the name A.L.F.A. The new company took over the factory in the city's Portello district that had belonged to the Italian branch of French carmaker Darracq, in a move led by that branch's managing director, Ugo Stella. Its first car was the 24 HP, designed by Giuseppe Merosi, the company's first chief engineer.
The name Alfa Romeo joins a company acronym to a surname. A.L.F.A. stood for Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, roughly the Lombard automobile manufacturing company. In 1915 the business was taken over by Nicola Romeo, an engineer and entrepreneur from near Naples. After World War I the cars were sold under the combined name Alfa Romeo, beginning with the 20-30 HP.
Alfa Romeo is a brand of Stellantis. The Italian state holding company IRI took control of the carmaker in 1933 and kept it until November 1986, when it accepted an offer from Fiat over a competing bid from Ford. Fiat later became Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, which merged with France's Groupe PSA on January 16, 2021, to create Stellantis.
Classic Alfa Romeos were built mainly in and around Milan. The original factory stood in the city's Portello district and was in use from the company's founding in 1910. During the 1960s production moved in stages to a new plant at Arese, near Milan, starting with the Giulia. The Alfasud was built in southern Italy at Pomigliano d'Arco, near Naples, in a plant begun in 1968.
Alfa Romeo's classic four-cylinder models, from the Giulietta to the Spider, used the company's twin-cam engine, which has two overhead camshafts. It first appeared as a 1.3-liter unit in the Giulietta of 1954 and was enlarged to 1.6 liters for the Giulia in 1962. Later Spiders carried 1.8-liter, badged 1750, and 2.0-liter versions.
Alfa Romeo built the Spider from 1966 to 1993, in four series. Some sources give 1994, the model year of 190 of the final cars, sold in the United States as Commemorative Editions. It debuted at the 1966 Geneva motor show with a Pininfarina-designed body and a 1.6-liter twin-cam engine, and is widely known as the Duetto, the name that won a public naming contest. The Graduate, a base U.S. trim introduced for 1985, was named after the 1967 film.
Quadrifoglio is Italian for four-leaf clover, and on an Alfa Romeo it marks high-performance versions. The emblem dates to 1923, when works driver Ugo Sivocci had a green clover on a white square painted on his RL as a good-luck charm and won the Targa Florio. Sivocci was killed at Monza later that year, and the white square was afterward changed to a triangle. The badge was later applied to fast road models.
Alfa Romeo stopped selling cars in the United States in 1995, after a sharp fall in sales that analysts linked to quality problems and stronger European competition. The marque had been sold in America since the 1950s, at first through New York importer Max Hoffman. It came back with the limited-production 8C Competizione and then, in 2014, with the 4C sports car, followed by the Giulia sedan.
