Walter Owen Bentley, known as W.O., founded Bentley Motors in 1919 at Cricklewood in north London, together with his brother Horace. The marque carries the family name. Its first model was the 3 Litre, and customer deliveries began in 1921. The original company lasted until 1931, when it went into receivership and was bought by Rolls-Royce.

Bentley and Rolls-Royce are separate companies today, but they were under common ownership from 1931 until 1998. Rolls-Royce bought Bentley out of receivership in 1931 and built both marques together, first at Derby and later at Crewe. When Vickers sold the car business in 1998, Volkswagen took Bentley and the Crewe factory, and BMW took direct control of the Rolls-Royce name on January 1, 2003.

Volkswagen Group has owned Bentley since 1998, when it bought the company from Vickers. Vickers had owned the Rolls-Royce and Bentley car business since 1980. Inside Volkswagen, Bentley has been grouped with Audi, Lamborghini and Ducati under Audi since 2022. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is a separate company controlled by BMW.

Bentley cars are made in Crewe, England, where production has been based since 1946. The first Bentleys were built at Cricklewood in north London until the company failed in 1931. Under Rolls-Royce ownership, production restarted in 1933 at Derby, where the cars were promoted as The Silent Sports Car. After World War II the motor car division moved from Derby to Crewe, and Volkswagen kept the factory in 1998.

Classic Bentley and Rolls-Royce cars look alike because, under shared ownership, many were one design sold under two badges. The Bentley S of 1955 differed from the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud only in its radiator grille shape and badging. The Bentley T-series was a badge-engineered Silver Shadow, and the 1980 Mulsanne was the Bentley version of the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit. Turbocharged models from 1982 began to set Bentley apart again.

Bentley has won the 24 Hours of Le Mans six times. The first victory came in 1924, in only the second running of the race, and was followed by four in a row from 1927 to 1930. Bentley financier Woolf Barnato was a winning driver in 1928, 1929 and 1930. The sixth win came in 2003 with the Speed 8, driven by Tom Kristensen, Rinaldo Capello and Guy Smith.

The Bentley Mark VI was the model with which Bentley production resumed after World War II, built at Crewe from 1946 to 1952. It was the first Bentley sold with a factory standard steel body. Its engine and chassis were closely related to those of the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith, which had a longer wheelbase. The R-Type replaced the Mark VI in 1952.

The R in Bentley Turbo R stood for roadholding. The Turbo R was launched in 1985 as a development of the Mulsanne Turbo, which had added a turbocharger to Bentley's 6.75-liter V8 in 1982. According to Hagerty, engineers stiffened the suspension and fitted wider alloy wheels to improve the Mulsanne's handling. The Turbo R stayed in production until 1997.
