Frequently Asked Questions about Classic Chevrolet

Chevrolet was founded on November 3, 1911, by racing driver Louis Chevrolet and businessman William C. Durant. Durant had founded General Motors in 1908 and was forced out of that company in 1910. The first Chevrolet was developed in a workshop in Detroit, and the car took the name of Louis Chevrolet, who was already known to the public from racing.
Louis Chevrolet was a Swiss-born racing driver and automobile designer, born on December 25, 1878, in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. He joined the Buick racing team at the invitation of William C. Durant, and in 1911 the two men started the Chevrolet company. He soon parted with Durant and sold his interest. Sources date his exit between 1913 and 1915. He died in Detroit on June 6, 1941.
Chevrolet became part of General Motors on May 2, 1918, when the corporation acquired the Chevrolet Motor Company. William C. Durant, forced out of General Motors in 1910, had used Chevrolet's success to buy up General Motors stock, offering Chevrolet shares in exchange, until he controlled the larger company again. Chevrolet is still a division of General Motors today.
The origin of the Chevrolet bowtie is disputed. Co-founder William C. Durant introduced the emblem in late 1913, and it appeared on 1914 models. An official Chevrolet history said Durant saw the pattern on wallpaper in a French hotel. His daughter wrote that he sketched it at the dinner table, his widow recalled him spotting it in a newspaper, and historian Ken Kaufmann found a similar logo in a November 12, 1911 advertisement for Coalettes fuel.
The first Chevrolet was the Series C Classic Six, a large touring car with a 40-horsepower six-cylinder engine. It was an expensive car for its time. Chevrolet changed direction in 1915 with the Four-Ninety, a car named for its $490 price and aimed at the low-priced market of the Ford Model T.
Chevrolet introduced the small-block V8 for the 1955 model year. The first version displaced 265 cubic inches and was rated at 162 horsepower with a two-barrel carburetor, or 180 horsepower with the optional Power Pack. Development was led by Ed Cole, who had worked on Cadillac's V8 before moving to Chevrolet in 1952. The engine was offered in the 1955 passenger cars and the Corvette, and it grew to 283 cubic inches for 1957.
Tri-Five is the nickname for Chevrolet's passenger cars of the 1955, 1956 and 1957 model years. It covers the 150, 210 and Bel Air series, including the Nomad wagon, and does not refer to a single model. According to Hagerty, the nickname was invented in later years, and the same cars are also called Shoebox Chevys because of their boxy profile.
K10 is Chevrolet's code for a half-ton, four-wheel-drive truck. Under the system Chevrolet introduced with its redesigned 1960 trucks, the letter C marked two-wheel drive and K marked four-wheel drive. The number gave the weight class: 10 for half-ton, 20 for three-quarter-ton and 30 for one-ton. A K10 is therefore the four-wheel-drive counterpart of the C10 pickup.
