Ford Motor Company was incorporated on June 16, 1903, in Detroit, Michigan, and took its name from founder Henry Ford. Ford and his partner Alexander Malcomson, a Detroit coal dealer, started it with $28,000 in cash from the original stockholders. The company began building cars in a former wagon factory on Mack Avenue and moved to a larger plant on Piquette Avenue in late 1904 or early 1905.
Ford Motor Company is a publicly traded company in which the Ford family still holds about 40 percent of the shareholder vote through Class B stock. Henry Ford bought out the other stockholders in 1919, and the company's stock was not offered to the public until January 1956. The Class B shares kept the family's voting power in place after that public offering.
Ford owns Lincoln and owned Mercury until that brand was closed. Ford Motor Company bought the Lincoln Motor Company, founded by Henry Leland, on February 4, 1922, for $8 million, and made it its luxury division. Edsel Ford launched Mercury to fill the gap between Ford and Lincoln, starting with the 1939 Mercury 8. The last Mercury was built on January 4, 2011.
Ford built its early cars in Detroit, first on Mack Avenue and then at the Piquette Avenue plant, where the first Model Ts were made. Production moved to Highland Park, Michigan, in 1910, and the moving assembly line began running there in October 1913. The Rouge complex in Dearborn began building complete cars with the Model A in 1927, and Thunderbird production started there in 1954 and Mustang production in 1964.
Ford built the Model T from 1908 to 1927 and sold the Model A that replaced it for the 1928 through 1931 model years. The Model T was introduced on October 1, 1908, and the 15 millionth car left the Highland Park line on May 26, 1927. Henry and Edsel Ford introduced the Model A on December 2, 1927, and The Henry Ford museum puts its four-year sales at nearly five million.
Ford introduced its flathead V8 in 1932, in the car known as the Model 18. The L-head engine displaced 221 cubic inches and was rated at 65 horsepower. Ford cast the crankcase and cylinder banks as a single unit to cut manufacturing cost, and The Henry Ford museum describes it as the first low-priced V8 cast in one piece. The design stayed in U.S. production, with modifications, until 1953.
Yes, the Ford 390 is generally classed as a big-block V8. It belongs to the FE engine family, named for Ford-Edsel, which Ford introduced for 1958 and built through 1976 in sizes from 332 to 428 cubic inches. The 390 arrived for the 1961 model year with a 4.05-inch bore and 3.78-inch stroke, and it shares the FE's 4.63-inch bore spacing with the 427 and 428.
Ford introduced the Thunderbird in 1954, the Mustang in 1964 and the Bronco in 1965. The two-seat Thunderbird was first shown at the Detroit auto show on February 20, 1954, and sold as a 1955 model. The Mustang was announced at the New York World's Fair on April 17, 1964. The Bronco followed on August 11, 1965, as a 1966 model in roadster, pickup and wagon body styles.
