Frequently Asked Questions about Classic Cadillac

Cadillac was founded in Detroit in August 1902, when engineer Henry M. Leland persuaded the backers of the failed Henry Ford Company to keep building cars instead of liquidating the plant he had been hired to appraise. The company was named for Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the French explorer who founded Detroit in 1701, and the Cadillac crest was adapted from his coat of arms.
General Motors has made Cadillac since July 29, 1909, when it bought the Detroit company for $4.5 million. Henry Leland and his son Wilfred stayed on to manage it until 1917, then left and started the Lincoln Motor Company. From the 1920s the cars were assembled at the Clark Street plant in Detroit, which was completed in 1921 and shut its last car assembly line in December 1987.
Cadillac is known for precision interchangeable parts, the electric self-starter, and early V8 and V-16 engines. It won Britain's Dewar Trophy after a 1908 Royal Automobile Club test in which three cars were dismantled, their parts mixed, and the cars reassembled. The electric starter, developed with Charles Kettering, arrived in 1912. A 314-cubic-inch V8 followed for the 1915 model year, and a 452-cubic-inch V-16 debuted at the New York auto show on January 4, 1930.
Cadillac first had tailfins on its 1948 models. The design came from the GM styling staff under Harley Earl, working with Cadillac stylist Frank Hershey, and the fins are usually traced to the twin tails of the Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter plane. They grew through the 1950s and reached their most extreme form on the 1959 cars, then shrank through the early 1960s and were far smaller by the middle of that decade.
LaSalle was a lower-priced companion make built by the Cadillac division of General Motors from 1927 through 1940. It was created to fill the price gap between Buick and Cadillac, launched with a 303-cubic-inch V8, and was styled by Harley Earl, a California designer brought in for the job. Like Cadillac, it was named for a French explorer. After the 1940 model year a lower-priced Cadillac Series 61 took its place.
The last Cadillac DeVille was the 2005 model, and for 2006 the revised car was renamed DTS, short for DeVille Touring Sedan. The name dated from the 1949 Coupe de Ville, a pillarless hardtop, and means "of the town" in French. A four-door Sedan de Ville joined it in 1956. The two-door Coupe de Ville was dropped after the 1993 model year, leaving only sedans.
The longest production Cadillac was the 1974-1976 Fleetwood Seventy-Five, which measured 252.2 inches, about 21 feet, on a 151.5-inch wheelbase. Sold as a nine-passenger sedan and as a limousine, it is often described as the longest production car sold in the United States. The largest engine Cadillac put in a passenger car was the 500-cubic-inch V8 introduced in the 1970 Eldorado, rated at 400 gross horsepower.
Elvis Presley is the driver most associated with a pink Cadillac. In July 1955 he bought a new 1955 Cadillac Fleetwood that was blue with a black roof, had it repainted pink, and gave it to his mother, Gladys, who had no driver's license. It replaced a pink 1954 Cadillac that had burned at the roadside that June. The 1955 car is kept on display at Graceland.
