Henry M. Leland and his son Wilfred founded the Lincoln Motor Company in Detroit in 1917. Leland had left Cadillac to build Liberty V-12 aircraft engines for the World War I effort, and his plant turned out 6,500 of them. He named the company after Abraham Lincoln, the first president he had voted for. Lincoln's first luxury automobiles followed in 1920.
Ford Motor Company bought Lincoln on February 4, 1922, paying $8 million after the young company had gone into receivership during the recession that followed World War I. Henry and Wilfred Leland left soon after the sale. Edsel Ford then guided Lincoln's direction, and the brand has remained Ford's luxury division ever since.
Lincoln and Cadillac belong to rival companies, but the same man was behind both. Henry Leland helped organize Cadillac in 1902 from the remains of the Henry Ford Company, and General Motors bought it in 1909. He ran Cadillac until 1917, when he quit after GM chief William Durant refused to build Liberty aircraft engines, and then started Lincoln. Cadillac stayed with GM, while Lincoln went to Ford in 1922.
Ford Motor Company made the Lincoln Continental through its Lincoln division. The car began as a one-off custom that designer Bob Gregorie created for Edsel Ford in 1939, using the Lincoln-Zephyr as its base. The design then went into series manufacture, and the production Continental debuted in October 1939 as a 1940 model. It was dropped after the 1948 model year, and the name returned for 1956 on the Continental Mark II, built by a separate Continental Division.
The Lincoln Continental had rear-hinged rear doors, commonly called suicide doors, for the 1961 through 1969 model years. They were fitted to the four-door sedan throughout and to the four-door convertible, which was offered through 1967. The redesigned 1970 Continental switched to conventional front-hinged rear doors. Lincoln brought the layout back on 80 Coach Door Edition Continentals for 2019 and continued the edition for 2020.
Lincoln stopped making the Continental in 2020, and the last U.S.-market car left the Flat Rock, Michigan, assembly plant on October 30 of that year. Lincoln said the full-size premium sedan segment was declining in the United States. The name had been retired twice before, after 1948 and after 2002. The Continental was Lincoln's last sedan in the United States, where the brand has sold only SUVs and crossovers since the 2021 model year.
The Lincoln-Zephyr was a streamlined, lower-priced Lincoln line built from 1936 to 1942. John Tjaarda of body maker Briggs designed it, working with Edsel Ford and Bob Gregorie, and it used unit-body construction, with the frame and body integrated into one structure. Power came from a 267-cubic-inch V-12 rated at 110 horsepower in 1936. Hagerty notes that the aluminum-head engine proved fragile.
Lincoln's main plants were in Michigan, first in Detroit and later in Wixom. Henry Leland's plant at Livernois and West Warren avenues in Detroit, established in 1917 for Liberty engine work, produced Lincolns until 1952. Production then moved to Wayne, Michigan, and in 1957 to the new Wixom Assembly Plant, which built Lincolns for 50 years. The last car made there, a Town Car, came off the line on May 31, 2007.
