The appeal of British classics

These cars are about the experience — top down, a slick gearbox, and steering that talks to you. The MGB, Triumph TR series, Austin-Healey 3000, and Jaguar E-Type defined the genre, and parts and club support in the US are excellent. Most are simple to work on, making them ideal first classics.

What to inspect

Rust is the main enemy: check sills, floors, and chassis rails carefully, as British monocoque cars rot in structural areas. Electrics (the famous Lucas systems) and overheating on twin-carb engines are common but manageable. A solid body matters far more than cosmetics — bodywork is the costly fix.
