Buying a classic car in Florida: what the asking price doesn't include
The price on a Florida listing leaves out sales tax: 6% at the state level, plus a county surtax on only the first $5,000, based on your home address. A dealer collects it; on a private sale you pay at the county tax collector's office when you title the car. In Hillsborough County, a $10,000 car carries $600 of state tax and $75 of surtax. Hillsborough also lists $75.75 to transfer a title, plus a $225 first-time registration fee that antique-registered cars skip. Apply for the title within 30 days of delivery, or a $20 fee is added.
There is no emissions or safety inspection, so only your own mechanic will look the car over. Flooding is the bigger risk. Check the title history before you pay: FLHSMV's online Motor Vehicle Information Check covers Florida titles, and an NMVTIS report covers other states, some of which do not brand flood cars. Look for a waterline or mud in the glove box, under the dash and in the trunk. A car titled elsewhere needs a VIN verification on form HSMV 82042 and its original title, not a copy.

Do I pay sales tax on a classic car bought from a private seller in Florida? +
Yes. On a private sale you pay it at the county tax collector's office when you title the car. The state rate is 6%, plus your county's surtax on only the first $5,000 of the price. A dealer collects the tax for you instead, and a trade-in reduces the taxable price.
What does it cost to title and register a classic car I buy in Florida? +
Fees vary by county. Hillsborough lists $75.75 to transfer a Florida title, $85.75 for an out-of-state title, $28 for a new plate and a $225 first-time registration fee, which antique-registered cars do not pay. Manatee County estimates $396 to $441 before sales tax.
